We kicked off 2010 by accelerating transit times, shaving off a full day on lanes network-wide, including lanes from northern California, Colorado and Washington going into western Oregon; lanes from Colorado and Washington going into northwestern Montana; and lanes from Utah, northern California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington going into Colorado.
Next came the launch of the Reddaway volume transportation hotline, giving customers direct access to a dedicated team experienced in shipments of more than six pallets, 6,000 pounds or 10 linear feet.

U.S. homebuilder confidence inches upward
For the second straight month, confidence among U.S. homebuilders was up in November, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo confidence index. The index reached a five-month high at 16. Index readings below 50 mean more respondents perceive conditions as poor.
For the five years leading up to December 2007, readings averaged 54. Economists point to the abundance of existing homes on the market, which compete against new-home construction.
U.S. factory output up in October
The U.S. Federal Reserve said U.S. factory output was up 0.5 percent in October, attributing the improvement to an increase in autos, appliances and business equipment.
Overall industrial production, which includes factories, mines and utilities, was flat for the month, primarily because of warm weather and the resulting reduced demand for electricity and gas heat.
U.S. retailers see monthly gains continue
October saw the fourth straight month for retail gains, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Excluding auto parts, retail sales were up 1.2 percent over September and 7.3 percent over the prior year.
Leading the increase were building supplies (up 12.2 percent over prior year), and clothing and sporting goods (up 6.7 percent over prior year).

Tips to Make Your
An ounce of prevention
Damage-free shipping is always our goal, and proper packaging is an important first step.
As you prepare your shipments for transit, here are some tips on packaging and stacking a pallet to keep in mind.
- Proper packaging protects your shipment during transit. Select the packaging that's appropriate for your product. Cartons, crates, cages or drums are good alternatives.
- Use sufficient packing materials around and between items, an inner box within the packaging, or a "shroud" of blankets or cushioning materials around your product for protection.
- Build a cube by aligning the vertical edges of multiple cartons and maintaining a flat, level top surface.
- Stack cartons squarely within the pallet, and use stretch wrap, shrink wrap, banding or spray adhesives to keep items together and to preserve the cube shape.
- Maintain carton strength by properly stacking pallets. For example, an interlocked pattern reduces carton strength by up to 50 percent, misaligned cartons reduce carton strength by 30 percent.
- Place single containers on outside corners of pallets, or ship them loosely.
- Secure cartons to the pallet with bands, tie downs, ratchet straps, stretch- or shrink-wrap, or breakaway adhesive.
