What's New at Reddaway
Reddaway named Regional Carrier of the Year
GlobalTranz, a leading logistics management firm specializing in carrier, supply chain and warehouse management, recently named Reddaway its 2009 Regional Carrier of the Year.
"The Carrier of the Year Awards recognize the best carriers as respected partners who provide exceptional service, regionally or nationally," says Michael Bookout, executive vice president-Sales and Pricing for GlobalTranz. "The awards allow our customers to have complete confidence in our top-tier carriers by providing them with information on the most efficient and reliable transportation services in the industry."
To determine rankings, GlobalTranz agents and representatives nationwide rated transportation suppliers based on six key criteria: on-time pickup, on-time delivery, customer service, driver courtesy, billing accuracy and claims and damages.
"It is gratifying to know that Reddaway delivers exceptional freight services to our customers," adds Bookout. "GlobalTranz values each of our top carriers as they play a vital role in the success of our business. Our Carriers of the Year provide highly efficient, reliable and cost-effective modes of transporting our customers' products from point A to B while offering impeccable customer service along the way. There is no doubt that GlobalTranz and Reddaway mutually benefit from these services, and we are delighted to honor them on behalf of our employees and customers for their dedication and commitment to excellence."
"As a leading 3PL, GlobalTranz works with a number of very good transportation providers," says T.J. O'Connor, Reddaway president. "To be selected from this field as the Regional Carrier of the Year is an honor and a direct reflection on our continued commitment to exceptional customer service each and every day."
Reddaway employee joins Gulf cleanup effort
With oversight responsibility for the cleanup in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is calling up Reservists to help get the job done—including Reddaway account manager Lieutenant Junior Grade Travis Henson. Henson is among a team of personnel from the Coast Guard, other federal agencies and BP stationed at the Mobile, Ala., Joint Unified Incident Command center.
Henson is putting his Reddaway experience to good use. Working in the Coast Guard's Logistics section, Henson supports efforts to triage purchase requests and obtain the necessary approvals—first from the Coast Guard and then from BP, which pays for the personnel and supplies. He also manages the transportation of the purchased goods to the Gulf Coast.
"From what I see, there is very little red tape," says Henson, explaining that purchase requests typically are approved within an hour.
The USCG Logistics office handles supplies for the ground forces and the cutters, which skim oil from the surface of the water. "We're sourcing booms, coveralls, protective suits, gloves—everything involved in the containment and oil removal operations for Coast Guard response personnel and vessels," adds Henson.
Reddaway is proud of Henson for his contributions to his country and the cleanup effort. For Henson, his 60-day assignment in the Gulf Coast will be completed in late July, allowing him to return home to Medford, Ore., and his Reddaway accounts. Henson, a two-year Reddaway employee, has been a Coast Guard Reservist for 18 years, serving one weekend a month and two weeks each year.
The United States Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security and one of the nation's five armed services. Its core roles are to protect the public, the environment and U.S. economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and U.S. coasts, ports and inland waterways.

Reddaway earns customer recommendation
We've all been there: An important new customer, challenging time considerations and the realization that you get one chance to make a good first impression.
When Peggy Tschudin, shipping and transportation manager for Wix® Filters, faced this situation, she considered her options and made her decision knowing that past performance is the best indicator of future performance.
For many years, Wix has trusted Reddaway for transportation services in the West. When the new customer's big order came in, Wix again turned to Reddaway.
The challenge was a two-week window to deliver more than 900 shipments from Gastonia, N.C., to locations throughout the Reddaway geographic footprint—from Hawaii to Wyoming, Washington to California. Wix ships from a single point, so the logistics plan had to be well thought out and strongly implemented.
The Reddaway service experience earned high praise. In a letter Tschudin wrote to Doug Bredahl (left) and Doug Weber (right) of Reddaway, she had this to say, "You committed to 'stay with me' till the project was completed, and this was all I needed to hear . . .
"Your involvement with working the details of the plan made it easy to contract business with you . . .
"Your flexibility as the customer added more requirements—liftgate and then one week later, in-store delivery—proved you were committed to making this a success . . . All shipments delivered two days before the deadline with no customer issues . . .
"The status reports from shipment tracking and daily communications kept our team ahead of any customer concerns . . .
"We will utilize your services and recommend your services to others because you have earned it!"
Reddaway is proud to serve the transportation needs of Wix Filters. Since 1939, Wix has been an innovator in filtration products. Wix designs, manufactures and distributes products for automotive, diesel, agricultural, industrial and specialty filter markets. Its product line includes oil, air, cabin interior, fuel, coolant, transmission and hydraulic filters for automobiles, trucks and off-road equipment.
To bring this same level of commitment, communications and service to your supply chain, contact your account manager or call the Reddaway Customer Care Group at 1-888-420-8960.

Consumer confidence on the rise
The May report by The Conference Board shows U.S. consumer confidence at its highest level since March 2008. Contributing to the improving picture is the expectation of more jobs to become available. However, the research group cautions that the debt crisis in Europe could stall this growing sense of optimism.
Motor carrier tracking information may guide infrastructure planning
Data collected by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration helps identify road congestion, information that can be useful to federal, state and local governments making spending decisions. In the ATRI's recently released 2009 Bottleneck Analysis, Chicago's I-290 interchange with I-90 and I-94 was identified as the worst bottleneck in the country.
U.S. goal to double exports generates nation-specific plans
President Obama's five-year plan to double exports has led to commercial engagement strategies for Brazil, India, China, Vietnam, South Africa and other nations, according to Francisco Sanchez, undersecretary for international trade at the Commerce Department. Sanchez says the Commerce Department has plans to work with companies that are new to exporting and expand the focus of those already selling abroad.

Tips to Make Your
Power over the pump
It's summer time. For many, that means family driving vacations. With summer driving often comes higher fuel prices.
Our mechanics and driving professionals have sure-fire ways to improve gas mileage and reduce carbon emissions.
For example, if every U.S. passenger car observed a 65 mph speed limit, we could save almost 9 billion gallons of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 90 billion tons in 10 years.
Other ideas from the professionals that you can put into practice today include:
- Check tire pressure regularly. Properly inflated tires can improve your fuel performance by up to five percent. It also can extend the life of your tires, saving you money.
- Avoid engine idling. The bigger the engine in your vehicle, the more fuel it wastes when it idles.
- Eliminate unnecessary weight from your vehicle. Remove 100 pounds, and you can improve your mileage by up to 2 percent.
- Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration and braking. These driving practices can lower your gas mileage.
- Maintain and service your vehicle, including regular oil changes. A well-tuned engine can improve fuel economy by up to four percent.
- Change your oil, air and fuel filters. A dirty filter makes your engine work harder than it has to, and that wastes fuel.

A Place Reddaway Calls Home
Settled in 1829, this small stopping place on the West bank of the Willamette River is now the culturally diverse city known as Portland, Ore., and a place Reddaway calls home.
With Outdoor magazine naming Portland one of the "10 Greatest Places to Live," Bicycling magazine calling it a top cycling city, and a reputation for being one of the "greenest" cities in the country, it should come as no surprise that outdoor activities play a big part in daily life.
Portland is home to more than 37,000 acres of parks and rated golf courses. Nearby Mount Hood offers four ski resorts and North America's longest ski season, as well as hiking, ice climbing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Willamette Valley is home to several wineries, and Multnomah Falls east of Portland is a natural attraction every photo buff must see.
Portland offers more than outdoor recreational activities. Its performing arts range from the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera and Portland Symphonic Choir to the Portland Taiko Asian-American drumming ensemble, the Pink Martini 12-member, world-touring music ensemble, and Do Jump! Extremely Physical Theater.
For more than 100 years, the city has recognized its Pacific Northwest heritage and beautiful location with the annual Portland Rose Festival. Named the Best Festival in the World in 2007 and drawing more than 2 million visitors over the two-week celebration, the festival includes home tours, auto racing, circus entertainment, parades and more.
Reddaway has been a proud member of the Portland area since its founding 91 years ago, delivering regional transportation solutions that help businesses better serve their customers.
