Transportation solutions to support today's inventory management strategies

Often, this takes the form of either smaller shipments, which must move quickly, or larger shipments, which move less frequently.

An environment where people love to work . . . and it shows

"It's all about the customer. They make the decisions, and as long as we listen, respond appropriately, and do the very best job, we will be successful," says John Holman, Reddaway Human Resources vice president.

"It's been ingrained in my career," says Holman. "Superior customer service must drive the business. From an HR perspective, we're interested in creating an environment where employees love to come to work and strive to make Reddaway the best transportation provider."

Holman, who joined Reddaway in August 2010, brings a wealth of experience in human resources from retail companies that depend on a good customer experience. Before Reddaway, he worked 10 years for The Sherwin-Williams Company, managing human resources responsibilities for a 12-state region in the West. "Yes, I know the West!" says Holman. He also was with Lowe's, the home improvement retailer, for 12 years.

"Since I've been with Reddaway, I've had a chance to visit our service centers and meet many of our professional dock workers, drivers and office personnel. We employ a lot of really good people! I've been amazed at the amount of tenure. Our employees love this company; they're proud of it and want it to succeed. And it shows in Reddaway's on-time service and low claims," says Holman.

"The economy has been a drag on the transportation industry, but Reddaway held its course and focused on our mission and customer service," he adds. "I'm very excited about where we are going as a company; I think we have a very bright future ahead of us."

U.S. business activity accelerated during September

cogsThe Institute for Supply Management-Chicago Inc. reported its index climbed to 60.4 in September, exceeding forecasts (an index above 50 signifies expansion). According to David Semmens, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank in New York, "The manufacturing sector is far from dead and buried. The pickup in new orders and production will postpone fears about a double dip in manufacturing for now." The ISM-Chicago report differs from other measures of manufacturing, which indicate a slowdown.

Committed to improving highway safety

Traffic on highwayFigures released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed a 20-percent decline in the number of truck-involved traffic fatalities. The data for 2009 puts fatalities at the lowest level in recorded Department for Transportation history. "These latest figures illustrate the trucking industry's deep commitment to improving highway safety," says Bill Graves, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations. "ATA will continue to advance its progressive safety agenda to further this outstanding trend."

Increase in sale contracts on existing homes

$20 bills in the shape of a houseAccording to the National Association of Realtors, purchase agreements on existing homes were up in August for the second straight month. Contract signings were up 6.7 percent in the South, 6.4 percent in the West, and 2.1 percent in the Midwest. They were down 2.9 percent in the Northeast.

A Place Reddaway Calls Home

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City and Saint George on a map, city scenes, skier, mountains, Brigham YoungSitting in the soup bowl of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, and surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest, the Wasatch Mountains to the east and north and the Oquirh ("oaker") Mountains on the west is Salt Lake City.

Go back about 30,000 years, and Lake Bonneville spread across the modern-day states of Utah, Nevada and Idaho, reaching elevations as high as 5,200 feet.

After the ice age, the lake receded; what remains is the Great Salt Lake, a body of water void of fish, a haven for migrating and nesting birds, and acclaimed by naturalist, John Muir, as "one of the great views on the American Continent."

No matter the time of year, the mountains surrounding Salt Lake City have something to offer. In winter, the almost-700 runs at seven close-by resorts create a skiers' paradise. When the snow melts, there's hiking, camping, climbing and mountain bike riding. And while the Great Salt Lake has no fish, the reservoirs and rivers in the Wasatch Mountains satisfy the craving to be out with a hook and line.

Salt Lake City is a place Reddaway calls home. With 117 dock doors and a 28-acre yard, the Salt Lake City service center handles thousands of shipments each day, making it one of the largest in the Reddaway network. Built in 2006, the service center is open seven days a week to meet customer needs.

For shippers in the East and Southeast, our Salt Lake City operations are a cost-effective distribution center for goods headed west. A final stop for the truckloads, trailers are unloaded and shipments are delivered the next-day into Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Colorado and Utah.

"We have about 200 employees, but despite the size, we're very much like a family here," says Mike Matich, service center manager. "We've been operating in Salt Lake City since 1995, and many of the people who were here when we opened the doors are still with us today."
