Existing-home sales fall
In its March report, the National Association of REALTORS® reported a 9.6 percent decline in existing-home sales for February.
Regionally, existing-home sales dropped 7.2 percent in the Northeast, 12.2 percent in the Midwest, 10.2 percent in the South, and 8.0 percent in the West. Existing-home sales include completed transactions for single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops.
Decline in consumer confidence
Bloomberg's Consumer Comfort Index fell unexpectedly to lows not seen since March 2010. The report suggests consumers now are concerned about rising food and energy prices (primarily the cost of gasoline) at a time when job growth is still slow in the country. There also are spillover concerns regarding the effect of the Japan earthquake. The automotive industry already is facing certain temporary plant closures because of spot parts outages.
These types of events weigh on the consumer psyche and affect their confidence that economic conditions will continue to improve.
Increases in Producer Price Index
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in March that the Producer Price Index for finished goods, intermediate materials, supplies and components and crude materials all rose in February.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, finished goods increased 1.6 percent. Intermediate materials, supplies and components were up 2.0 percent, the largest increase since July 2008. Crude materials advanced 3.4 percent in February.
Container volume up at Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
Imports for February were up slightly at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (3.2 percent and 12.4 percent, respectively) compared to the prior year. Exports were up 1.6 percent from LA, and down 1 percent from Long Beach, compared to 2010.
China is the largest trading partner for these ports, and its annual lunar New Year celebration, which closes factories for two or three weeks, affected port activity.

Jim Allgaier has been with Reddaway a little less than a year, but with 36 years in the industry, he is passionate about transportation. A Place Reddaway Calls Home
Gateway to the Rocky Mountains and nestled along the Boise River, Boise is a paradise for those who love the outdoors.
