Saluting Reddaway state driving champions
To qualify for the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), drivers must place first in their respective classes at the state competition.
The state and national competitions include challenging driving skills and maneuvering tests, a pre-trip inspection and a written examination covering vehicle operation and federal safety regulations.
To participate in the state competitions, drivers must be accident-free for one year.
This year, Reddaway will send the following state champions to the national competition:

- Mark Peterson (Washington) 3-Axle (photo middle right)
- Jeff Payne (Utah) Twin Trailers (photo bottom right)

A new start for YRC Worldwide
On July 22, YRC Worldwide successfully closed the financial restructuring plan announced on April 29, positioning the company and its brands for long-term success.
It also ushers in a new board of directors and chief executive officer. Tapped for the company's top leadership position is transportation industry veteran and former president and CEO of Yellow Transportation, James L. Welch.
"Mr. Welch brings hands-on institutional knowledge along with an employee- and customer-focused approach to a company built on reliability and customer relations," said YRC Worldwide Board Chairman James Hoffman in announcing Welch as the new CEO. Welch has more than 30 years of experience in the transportation sector.
Durable goods orders for May exceed expectations
A Commerce Department report issued in late June showed orders for durable goods (excluding transportation equipment) were up 0.6 percent in May, a performance that outpaced forecasts.
This suggests manufacturing may be one of the first areas to bounce back from the slowing growth in the first half of the year.
EPA launches SmartWay dray-truck initiative
"EPA's SmartWay dray-truck initiative will help ports contribute to their local economies while protecting the air quality, environment and public health of nearby communities," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.
The initiative calls for carriers to sign an agreement to track and reduce particulate-matter and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions below the industry average over a three-year period; in return, SmartWay dray-carriage shipper partners would assign 75 percent or more of port freight to the cleaner vehicles.
Per-person spending down $7,300
According to a Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco researcher, the recession that ended June 2009 cut per-person spending for the period of December 2007 through May 2011 by more than $7,300.
Per-capita consumption is 1.6 percent below the pre-recession peak. The researcher attributes the lower consumption rate to declines in household net worth, increases in savings and reductions in lending.
Freight index at six-month low
In its July report, the DOT Freight Transportation Services Index showed a 1.8 percent drop in freight from April to May, the lowest level since November 2010.
This seasonally adjusted index measured ton-miles carried by for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and airfreight carriers.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience
Reddaway has built a reputation for safety. Fleet safety awards, driver performance in truck driving competitions and low days-away-from-work rates reflect our pledge to work safely.
While all employees share this commitment, our thanks go to Tom Solheim, safety director, for instilling the knowledge and stoking the motivation that has enabled us to maintain our enviable safety performance over the years. Therefore, it was with deep respect and some sadness that we wished Tom well as he retired at the end of June.
Tom joined Reddaway in 1972. We had 20 employees then, and Tom was our newest driver. Later, Tom worked as a dock professional, loading trailers and driving. In 1986, Tom started the Reddaway safety initiative and subsequently increased the function and mindset to what it is today.
Over his almost-40 years with the company, Tom hired and trained countless employees, opened service centers throughout the West, and was a familiar face at transportation association activities. We will miss Tom, but know he leaves a well-managed safety program to our new Safety Director Dave Yonemoto.
Tom is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to Reddaway.

A Place Reddaway Calls Home
Chances are very, very good that the raisins you love in your oatmeal, cookies, cakes and by the handfuls out of the box came from Fresno and the fertile San Joaquin Valley of California. In fact, 60 percent of the world's raisins and 90 percent of the raisins sold in the United States are produced here.
Credit the mission padres along the El Camino Real who brought viticulture (cultivation of grapevines) to the new world, growing grapes for sacramental wine and muscat raisins. Farmers also saw the potential. With the arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1872, the introduction of irrigation, and the immigration of experienced viticulturists, Fresno was set to become the Raisin Capital of the World.
Today, agriculture and food processing drive the Fresno economy. However, manufacturing (farm machinery, transportation equipment and vending machines) and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service also contribute to the area's growth boom.
Reddaway traces its Fresno presence to the mid 1970s and moved from an open-dock, produce-oriented center to the current 26-door center in July 2009. Equally balanced in terms of inbound and outbound shipments, the Fresno service center provides vital services for processing and manufacturing plants in the area.
"Packing houses typically don't have much warehousing space and rely on one-day service for their boxes and labels. Mostly, these are shipments coming from other parts of California and Reno," says Tim Sennett, Fresno service center manager. "Many of our customers begin the day at 4 in the morning and will close their docks by one or two o'clock, so a lot of our business needs delivery before noon."
Tim adds that the center also serves several area prisons.
"Their security requirements are tight. Shipments are closely inspected—there can be no damage to the cartons—and our drivers are carefully watched and must show several forms of identification, even though the same driver might make several deliveries a week there."
"Our team is unbelievable; it's a real family atmosphere," says Tim. "We have a pair of sisters in customer service who take great care of our customers, and many of our drivers grew up together and have worked here for 20-plus years. We all know that the customer is #1, and we go beyond obstacles to help maintain their business."
