U.S., Canada flags with chain and locked padlocks betweenOn Sept. 11, we paused to remember the events and the victims of 9/11/2001. Ten years later, the actions of that day continue to affect our lives.

For those of us handling transportation activities, one notable change is the significant security enhancements at border crossings.

To meet new security and risk reporting requirements, shippers were forced to account for activities throughout the supply chain. This led to technology improvements which deliver important gains in efficiency and productivity.

Our company worked with federal agencies, helping develop transportation requirements designed to maintain secure borders. We remain compliant and certified in programs, such as C-TPAT, FAST, CSA and PIP. which enable us to keep supply chains between Canada and the United States moving smoothly.

Decrease in trade deficit

Cargo ShipExports increased and imports decreased in July, causing the U.S. trade deficit in goods and services to decrease to $44.8 billion, from $51.6 billion in June.

The increase in exports is primarily attributed to increases in industrial supplies and materials, capital goods, and automotive vehicles, parts and engines.

New-home starts down in August

construction workers reviewing blueprintsU.S. home building starts for August were down 5 percent from July, hitting a three-month low, according to the Commerce Department.

Single-family homes were down 1.4 percent, while apartment building starts were down 12.4 percent for the month. A sign of future construction, building permits were up 3.2 percent.

Prediction of moderate holiday retail sales increases

Woman wearing winter clothes holding shopping bagsShopperTrak is predicting U.S. retail sales will increase 3 percent during November and December 2011, compared to the same period last year.

This is less than the 4.1 percent sales increase seen in the 2010 holiday season comparison to 2009.

The company also expects retail foot traffic will continue to decrease through the end of 2011.

For example, as a registered user of our secure website, you can:

  • Complete bills of lading online to save time and minimize key stroke errors.
       The system will:
    • Pre-populate fields by integrating with your reddawayregional.com address book
    • Assign pro numbers, which display on your BOL
    • Transmit the BOL electronically into the Reddaway billing system, reducing the risk of data-entry errors
    • Schedule a pickup at the same time you create your online BOL
  • Use the pickup request tool to provide the advance information that ensures the correct equipment and capacity arrives at your dock, including:
    • Time of day when shipment will be available for pickup
    • Time of day when you close or stop shipping
    • Exact piece count for skids, cartons, drums, totes, etc.
    • Weight and destination ZIP code for each shipment
    • Whether cargo includes foods or poisons
  • Print shipping labels, including the ship to/from fields, PRO number and shipment reference number (e.g., purchase order numbers)
  • Track up to 20 shipments at a time by PRO, BOL or PO number, or by shipping, receiving or bill-to locations.

Kim Morgan, Reddaway coverage map"Typically, I work through the sales force, but when an issue does get to me, the customer usually is pretty hot," acknowledges Kim Morgan, manager of Pricing Support.

"I listen to the customer, and try to work with them. If I can return them to a happy state, that's a good day!"

Dispute resolution is just one of Kim's many responsibilities in the Reddaway main office in Clackamas, Ore. She also monitors rate implementation, manages the weight and research (W&I) initiative and is the "go-to" person for just about any question that touches on invoicing. "There's never a boring day! I love the challenges of the job, and even after nearly 15 years, I still learn something new each day."

Kim started at Reddaway in 1997 as a biller. Over the years, she added responsibilities, advanced in the pricing department, and contributed to the company's growth.

"When I joined Reddaway, we were a much smaller company. Most of the people in our department have been here as long or longer. I think our tenure is unique and makes us better. We are knowledgeable on our policies and procedures, and that means we can better help our customers."

Kim is looking forward to the future, "Business is up, and we're getting more and more new business. Things are turning around!"

A Place Reddaway Calls Home

Fontana, Calif.

Fontana highlighted on California map, sites of interest45 miles east of Los Angeles and out of range of enemy fire, Henry J. Kaiser built the first steel mill west of the Mississippi in Fontana in 1942. Its purpose: Supply steel for Kaiser's shipyards. During its heyday, the Fontana Works employed more than 10,000 employees and produced steel for hundreds of ships.

While Kaiser no longer owns the 1,800-acre facility, California Steel Industries maintains a smaller operation on the site, and Fontana is still the leading supplier of flat rolled steel in the West. The works also has had a life in the movies, serving as the site where the cyborg met its match in Terminator II.

Reddaway has called Fontana home since 1987. With its centralized site in Southern California, shipments arriving at this 165 dock-door service center can directly reach almost every terminal in the Reddaway network. Its location also is an asset to the many national accounts who maintain warehouses in the stretch of California known as the Inland Empire.

The Fontana terminal operates six days a week. For customers who use its consolidation and distribution capabilities, that means truckload shipments that arrive on Saturday are available for delivery on Monday.

"The key to Fontana's accomplishments is the 300-plus people who work here. We're blessed with a high-quality team," says Dave Floen, terminal manager. "We have a seasoned sales staff, a full shop that provides maintenance support, the best P&D [pickup and delivery drivers], line drivers, freight handlers, and an office staff that handles thousands of bills flawlessly each day. I'm lucky to be the terminal manger."
