Weak dollar has its benefits

Down arrow over U.S. currencyAccording to Harvard University economics professor Martin Feldstein, a weak dollar benefits the U.S. economy.

"A lower dollar means more exports, and it also means a shift from consuming imported products to consuming goods and services that we produce in the United States," said Feldstein.

 

U.S. industrial production gains in July

construction workers reviewing blueprintsData from the Federal Reserve shows that factories, mines and utilities turned in the biggest production gain of the year during July, with a 0.9 percent increase for the month.

Recovering from supply chain disruptions caused by Japan's earthquake, auto and auto part production was up 5.2 percent for the month. Excluding motor vehicles, factory levels were up 0.3 percent.

Fuel efficiency standards set for trucks

person fueling truckAmerican Trucking Associations (ATA) praised the Obama administration for setting the first fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

"While it is too early to know all the potential effects of this rule, we do know it sets us on a path to a future where we depend less on foreign oil, spend less on fuel and contribute less to climate change," said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

Jeff Payne, Reddaway coverage mapJeff Payne, professional driver, remembers quite vividly the day he was first urged, and not in a subtle way, to compete in the national truck driving championships.

"I had just joined Reddaway back in 1993 and my terminal manager pushed me real hard to compete," Jeff says. "Looking back, I'm very grateful he did that. The competition is in my blood now, and I won't quit anytime soon."

Jeff's competitive fire is the company's gain.

In late August, he made company history, becoming the first driver to win his class at the annual National Truck Driving Championships. The Cedar City, Utah, resident took the top prize in the Twins Class competition. It was his first national championship in 11 consecutive attempts.

His dad owned a trucking company, so it only seemed natural for Jeff to start out in the transportation industry 25 years ago. Reddaway has been like family to him over the last 18 of those years, and he says he wouldn't compete for anyone else.

"I love Reddaway, and they've been great to me," Jeff says.

"They're a first-class company from the top down, and I was so happy to represent my co-workers in taking home the top prize in my class."

When asked what he did differently this year in Orlando to finally become national champion, he cited two things: persistence and great coaching and support from his wife, Rhonda.

To compete at the nationals, drivers must be acciden- free for a full year leading up to the event and place first in their state-level driving championship.

"I know I was at the bottom of the pack before the drive-offs in Orlando, and so I was just hoping at that point to place second or third," Jeff said.

"But I was a lot calmer this year and kept my composure. I didn't get all worked up, and that paid off for me big-time."

For the past two weeks, Jeff has received congratulations from family, from business colleagues and even from drivers at competitor companies.

"It feels great to get the recognition from a wide circle of people," Jeff said. "It certainly puts a smile on my face when I'm heading down the road."

A Place Reddaway Calls Home

Eureka, Calif.

Eureka highlighted on California map, sites of interestWilliam Carson was going for the gold when he left Canada for California. What he found wasn't the shiny yellow stuff, but the gold that grows—redwoods!

Carson and his partner logged the timberland they bought and operated the mills. This led the way to stakes in manufacturing, railroads and ships, oil fields, banking and politics.

A lasting treasure of the lumber baron is the Carson Mansion, a Queen Anne Victorian he had built in 1884–85.

A combination of towers, turrets, columned porches, gables, gingerbread detail, stained glass and a complex use of color, the mansion remains one of the most photographed structures of its type and the inspiration for other buildings in Eureka.

Reddaway has called Eureka home since 1994. Its 14-dock-door service center may be small-to-mid-size in the Reddaway network, but it holds a strategic location for providing service throughout Northern California.

"There's a positive attitude in the air among our customers. We're starting to see more business from our long-standing accounts, and we've picked up new business in the agricultural and horticultural industries that are developing in the area."
